Tom Ole Nilsen (UiB)

Tom Ole Nilsen is an associate professor in aquaculture biology at the University of Bergen. He has more than 15 years’ experience with fish physiology. An important research topic is how environmental factors such as light, temperature and salinity affect smoltification and smolt quality in salmonids.

In recent years, Nilsen’s research has focused on challenges associated with production of large smolt and post-smolt. His approach integrates mechanistic responses from the molecular, cellular and organismal level, with the ultimate goal to understand how, and why various physiological systems acclimate and adapt to changes in the environment. Relevance and implementation of research results in the aquaculture industry is a central focus of the research.
